Children learn best based on following their lead and interests.
For more than a century now, the child-focused approach that Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, developed for educating children has been transforming schools around the globe.
As soon as you enter a classroom, you know that something different is afoot. Montessori classrooms are immediately recognizable. You will see children working independently or cooperatively with peers or teachers, with purposefully designed learning materials; deeply engaged in their work; and respectful of themselves and their surroundings
The Montessori Method fosters hands-on, intrinsically-motivated growth for children in all areas of their development—cognitive, emotional, social, and physical.

“An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking; it involves the spiritual development of [a person], the enhancement of their value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live.”.

Ascension Montessori Children’s Center has served this church and the community for decades and counting! It first opened as Ascension Nursery School on February 2, 1970, providing activities for approximately twenty children, aged 3-5, three mornings a week.
In 1993, the name was changed to Ascension Lutheran Children’s Center to better describe the care offered, expanding its care to School age children attending the Elementary school across the street named “Rainbow Club”. It served as an After-School Programs to those children whose parents needed childcare while they completed their Full-time shifts.
In the years to come, Ascension Lutheran Children’s Center re-assessed the needs of their children and families and progressed their style of education to an approach that takes into consideration the development of young children and their need for real-life experiences, opportunities to practice life skills, and learn based on their individual interests.
2025 marked the year we officially changed our name to Ascension Montessori Children’s Center and to better serve our families with young children, were approved to extend our license to serve children as young as 18 months old. We are excited for what’s to come!
“The first essential for the child’s development is concentration. The child who concentrates is immensely happy.”
